Hello, Avalon Middle School parents and guardians.
Our first round of Progress Monitoring tests are behind us and our students and teachers did a great job. Dr. Blue may call your child out of their scheduled classes if they are involved in make-up testing. I have a few important announcements that will likely impact your children or already has.
• First, tomorrow morning’s Cross-Country practice has been cancelled. We do wish our Cross-Country teams the very best as they compete this afternoon. I know they will represent Avalon well.
• Second, if your child is a walker, please remind them to be very careful as they are making their way to and from school. We ask that walker students enter and exit closer to the bus ramp, as the traffic is much heavier closer to the front of the school building.
• Next Tuesday evening is our BETA Induction Ceremony. If your child has brought home an invite, please join us at 6:00 PM for our celebration.
• Avalon Middle School now has an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and I have included a social media QR code & link where you can connect with them and support our school.
• We have passed the first quarter mid-term point (last Wednesday, 9/10. Please keep track of your child’s academic performance and reach out to their teachers, if necessary, as soon as possible.
• I have also included a graphic to assist you and your child with connecting to their teachers via ROOMS.
We thank you for a great start to the year. Next week, I will send home a Title 1 Parent Survey link and look forward to receiving your feedback. We will continue to work together to push our students to achieve their fullest potential.
Thank you and Go KNIGHTS!

Dear Avalon Middle School Families,
This information is to inform you of Florida State Board of Education statute related to required instruction in health education topics for students in Grades K-12. Florida Statute 1003.42 requires school districts to develop a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and developmentally appropriate K-12 instruction for various topics including suicide prevention, substance use and abuse prevention, dating violence, abstinence, resiliency, and child trafficking prevention education.
In accordance with Florida State Board of Education Rule 6A-1.094124, Required Instruction Planning and Reporting requires school districts to annually provide a minimum of five (5) hours of data-driven instruction to students in grades 6-12 related to civic and character education and life skills education through resiliency using the health education standards, including the social, emotional, and physical effects of social media.
To meet these mandatory state requirements, our school district utilizes an online program, Navigate 360/Compass Curriculum, which contains lessons created by experts in the field and cover grade level mandated topics in an appropriate, interactive manner. Lessons are presented in an online format and may be presented either individually, in whole, or small groups. Families have access to view all lessons by logging in through the student portal under the Clever app where the Compass Curriculum app resides. It is important to note and reiterate that this requirement is mandated by the Florida State Board of Education, and these lessons will be presented to all secondary students in our district, including Dual Enrollment students and any student participating virtual learning.
Avalon Middle will begin presenting these lessons to our students this Thursday, 9/18. We will present one lesson a month until the month of March when we will have covered all required material.
Thank you and Go KNIGHTS!

Tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM, we will have a PTO meeting in the AMS media center. Below, you will see a list of some items on the agenda. If you are unable to attend, please feel free to reach out to our PTO and visit their social media site for more information.

This is a final reminder regarding consent forms for our FluMist vaccine clinic here at the school on 9/25/2025. If you are planning to take advantage of this convenient opportunity to get your student protected from the flu virus, please remember to complete the front and back consent form that sent home on Monday, 8/25/25 and return it to school by Monday, 9/8/25.

Bus 611 is running late today. The bus has departed campus and is on its route. Thank you for your patience as we work to get students home safely.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that school districts provide parents with an annual state, district, and school status reports to include but not limited to the following: student achievement, accountability and subgroup data.
The FDOE uses data to produce readily accessible school and district report cards, providing transparent information to all stakeholders. The district report card specifically reports on progress toward transitioning students from one level (elementary, middle, high) to the next and reports graduation data.
The reports can be accessed at · https://edudata.fldoe.org/index.htm
If you have any questions about these reports please contact Principal Stokes or AP Curtis. Thank you and have a great evening!

As the beginning of the year is well underway, the admin and guidance department are looking into changes that need to take place to level out some of our more crowded classes. In the next few days, your child may come home with a schedule change that will place them in the same class, but hopefully a less crowded one. If this happens to your child, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience but are trying to offer a better learning environment for students and better teaching environment for teachers.
In addition, please remember that supervision is not provided before 8:35 AM at the parent drop off. Please help us by refraining from dropping your children off earlier than that time. Also, when dropping off in the mornings, please only use the first lane (nearest to the sidewalk). This is also for the safety of our children. Please assist us with this matter.
Also, remember that Monday, September 1st, is Labor Day and we have no school. We will be back at our regular schedule bright and early Tuesday morning. Our first round of progress monitoring begins soon, and First Quarter Mid-Term is only two weeks away (Sept 10th). Tuesday morning, September 23rd at 8:00 AM, we will hold our first School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting for the 2025/2026 school year.
We are off to a great start and proud of the work our kids are doing. I look forward to more great things this year. As always, if you need to reach out to me, please feel free to call or email (StokesR@santarosa.k12.fl.us).
Thank you for trusting us with your children & Go KNIGHTS!

Parents/Guardians:
For your convenience, our Department of Health nurses will be offering the Flumist here at our school on Thursday, 9/25/25. Your students will bring home consent forms and an information packet on Monday, 8/25/25. The consent form is front and back page that must be completed and returned to the school no later than Monday, September 8, 2025 for your student to receive the Flumist vaccine on campus during our vaccine clinic. Please review the packet, complete both the front and the back of the consent form, and return to the school by 9/8/2025 if you wish to take advantage of this convenient opportunity. This year, our health department will be administering the nasal Flumist vaccine to every age group of students. No student will receive a vaccine without a properly completed consent form.

Please be aware that Avalon busses will be late this afternoon due to weather. As the end of the day approached for our neighboring school (BRE), it caused their busses to run behind, which in turn pushes our busses behind.
Please continue to monitor Facebook as we are trying to update parents to what busses have picked up at school.
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

This is Mr. Stokes, principal of Avalon Middle School, with an important message for parents and families. We are conducting a lockdown drill at school today as part of our regular emergency drill process as required by state law. We know that drills can cause possible concerns for our students, but we believe it’s important for them to know exactly what to do in an emergency and these practice drills enhance their safety. Again, all students are safe, and this is simply a required lockdown drill.
Thank you for your understanding and support.

The first week of school was amazing. It was great to see the kids after summer break, and they seemed to transition to the new cell phone policy without issue. As we enter the second week of school, I wish to remind you of a few important matters.
1. We will have a PTO Interest & Title 1 Review meeting tomorrow night, August 18th at 6:00 PM. This meting will take place in the school’s media center.
2. Please continue to sign forms from your child’s first day packets and send them back to school. In addition, please complete on-line forms such as the Free and Reduced Lunch Application, found at www.myschoolapps.com, at your earliest convenience. Each family needs to apply only once, not once per child. Even if your child received free or reduced meals last year, you still need to apply. Last year’s benefits will expire September 19, 2025.
3. Please remember that the doors do not open each morning until 8:35. Please do not drop your children off prior to this time as we have no way to supervise your children prior to that time.
4. Our busses did a much better job getting to campus by the end of the week. If you child rides the bus, please remind them of the importance of listening for their bus number in the hallways after school. We announce busses arrival multiple times each day, via intercom, bullhorn and adults calling in the hallway. Still, we are having kids miss their busses. Please help us by reminding them to listen for their busses.
Again, we had a great week and look forward to many more to come. Please reach out to us with any concerns you may have as early as possible. You can always reach me either by phone, or my email (StokesR@santarosa.k12.fl.us).
Thank you for your time.
Go KNIGHTS!

Hello, Avalon 6th Grade Parents & Guardians,
Our School Advisory Council is currently seeking two (2) parent representatives from the 6th grade. As a parent of one of our 6th grade students, we are asking that you consider serving on the Avalon Middle School Advisory Council. A letter was sent home with your child with more information. If you are willing to serve on the Avalon SAC, please return the letter with your child by Monday, August 18th or you may use the QR code below.
Thank you so much! #GOKNIGHTS

We have had two great days of school thus far and completed our first safety drill for the 2025/2026 school year. We will have our second safety drill next week, as we are required to have two within the first 10 days of school. From that point on, we will have one a month for the duration of the school year.
Due to inclement weather and other unforeseen circumstances, our busses were quite late yesterday. This is not uncommon at the beginning of the school year and we will strive to improve this process as we move forward. Our front office staff will work diligently to update our bus arrivals on social media, but please be patient. Our goal is to get students home as quickly as possible, but first we aim for safety.
If your student is interested in cross-country, there will be an informational meeting for students on Monday, August 25th at 7:45am in the multi-purpose room. Students will need a signed permission slip to participate. The first practice will be on Wednesday August 27th from 7:45am-8:45am. Practices will be held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:45am until the end of October. There will be a few meets with other schools during the season. More information will be forthcoming. Track season will not begin until spring, but students are still encouraged to attend cross-country for conditioning.
We thank you for trusting us with your children and look forward to an amazing 2025/2026 school year.
